rehab. la fete

rehab. la fete, originally uploaded by marcofrey.

my most recent collage. appropriately titled as it came from tabloid mags. the crazy person eyeing the green bunny is either going to or coming from rehab while everyone watches... look closely at the border of eyes!

homage to georgia o'keeffe

so in light of the georgia o'keeffe show that's opening at the museum today, i thought i'd post my homage to georgia o'keeffe. my favorite paintings of her's are the steer skulls. here, i've turned a headless mannequin into a steer skull and put a flower where it's head used to be. this painting currently has the honor of hanging above our fire place (itself an art instillation).

Julia'a abstracts

so as you can see below, i've finished the abstract paintings for julia. i didn't intend for there to be a bird/nesting theme, but it's hard to ignore with the oval and feather shapes in the paintings. plus, kevin and julia have a new home, so it's fitting. i've photographed them with the top orienting the way i imagine them. i think they are quite successful attempts as my first abstracts. i've had much fun working on them and may do more in the future. oh, the photos below are not the best quality and i photographed the artwork in my studio, so you can see my (italian) indoor/outdoor carpet behind the paintings.

ooooh, an abstract! or 4.

so i'm now working on a project for julia. she has asked me to paint her 4 abstract paintings that will hang in her living room. each canvas is 20"x20" and will be hung in sort of a diamond style, together they will form a large square formation though.

as i don't consider myself an abstract painter, and have never painted an abstract before, i was off to a rocky start. the colors are earthy reds, greens, yellows and bronze and except for the bronze, they aren't colors that i have been using recently. i think this has also added to initial difficulties i was having.

the first try was a group of paintings that i really liked, but didn't think julia would appreciate them. i admit it was a bit on the creepy side, so i took a picture and painted over them. the second try resulted in a similar result: i liked them, but didn't think julia would, though they were not creepy this time. they were in fact, too simple with too many circles.

off and running.

so i painted over them a third time, and i have almost very happy with them. i think they are a good compromise that julia will also be very pleased with. i just have a little more work to do on them and i think they will be complete!

woo!
